Lolita Blog Carnival: Your Favorite Theme Print

It couldn't be a coincidence that just as I set my heart on my new dream dress(es), this week's LBC prompt matched perfectly! So I will take this chance to expand on my new-found love: stained-glass prints!

There are so many reasons I love these: for one, they are prints that are both classical and elegant, without being food or animals. They also suit the gothic aesthetic while avoiding the usual tropes -not that those skulls or cemetery prints aren't lovely! It just renews it a bit - and doesn't  feature crosses, which I always find a bit out of place in fashion. They are also intricate without being overbearing, and just overall gorgeous!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Haenuli - Stained Glass of St Giles

Baby the Stars Shine Bright - Love Moon Princess Stained Glass

Moi-Même Moitié - Holy Stained Glass

Moi-Même Moitié - Stained Glass Print Chiffon OP

 Baroque -Abandoned Night

Alice and the Pirates - Gloria Stained Glass

Which one is your favorite? I would love to know! If I could stumble upo either Haenuli's or MMM's Chiffon Stained Glass, I would be delighted!

And find out what other prints lolitas love!

Lolita Blog Carnival: Favorite brand - AP or BtSSB?

These initials seem to still rule the world of lolita, despite recent indie brands' gain in popularity. Of course, this has to do with the reputation these two brands built, and with their particularities. Both Angelic Pretty and Baby the Stars Shine Bright are, arguably, geared towards sweet lolita (of course, they come out with classic and gothic coordinates, but I will focus on sweet, as it does seem to me to be their main cue.)

Ready? Fight!

Let's start with brand identity.

In an interview Kumiko Uehara defines what she designs as dresses she hopes will make the wearer happy and feel like a princess.

AP rides on the OTT side of life. According to their website, the brand concept is to "provide adorable clothing covered in lace" for girls to keep alive their dream of being "fairytale princesses." Sounds familiar? So the concepts are pretty much what we consider lolita to be, in essence.

But their is a real difference in their styles.

Baby to me really has that luxurious, elegant look that makes me feel like a princess. That is the first thought that popped to my mind when I tried on my first Baby dress. It is overall a more mature style of lolita; I would call it classic sweet, if not oldschool sweet. When I tried on the AP dress in the store, I thought "I'm a lolita!" (and that was delightful in itself), but nothing beats feeling like a princess! ;) Baby relies more on fabric choice and details, sewn in embellishments, like pin tucks, ruffles and even just well placed seams. Granted, they don't always look the best - this dress deserves a little rethinking...

Angelic Pretty usually sports more frills and lace, and a higher waist, not to mention crazy cute prints, which creates more childish, cute lolita style. They clearly saw where lolita was going with OTT and catered to the trend. Now I love those prints (for the most part), but sometimes I do feel like the dress itself becomes secondary; the print takes over and the cut is rather basic. AP then lacks the intricate detailing that defines lolita for me.
Though this print is very cute, the garment itself is of a rather plain cut -though obviously anything more elaborate with this kind of print would be a little overwhelming.

I have come to like plastic jewellery from loving OTT sweet, and you have to admit, AP's rings are just too cute, but I used to hate it. Oh, and I love Imai Kira, so points for AP. Another specificity of AP is their colorways, with lots of pastels and wide range of colors in each prints, compared to the more monochrome designs in BtSSB.

This week's them was to talk about our favorite brand, so my own take on the topic was rather to compare these two brands I love. There are many more, and I'm not sure I can decide on a single one. In the end, I like both brands, it just depends on what style their latest model is.

Time for some love! I may not be fond of all their designs (just because they're brands doesn't mean everything they do is perfect!), there is a reason why they get so much attention!

That said, I don't look at the burando when I look for a dress, I do look at the item itself! My wardrobe includes Bodyline, Metamorphose, Baby the Stars Shine Bright, handmade, vintage and non-lolita. Also, I only jokingly pit these two against each other - just beacuse they are the big names doesn't mean you have to join a clan and only love one!

I'm looking forward to reading about brands! Hopefully some indie brands will be presented - I love quite a few, but never bought from them so I can't really talk about them properly.

LBC: The most un-lolita thing about me...

Hmm, so many un-lolita things about me...

Perhaps I'll mention my love for hammering things, rough sports, and armor-making (samurai armour, at the moment!).
I love lolita as a lifestyle as much as a fashion, and I can't think of nicer way to spend the day than having tea, or reading a good book, or embroidering, but thankfully I have never let lolita stop me from enjoying my other hobbies (as long as I don't risk any of my lovely dresses!). That could be roller skating, building things, hiking... I am a very do-it-yourself person, so I have never shrunk away from repairing my bike, making shelves for my room or using a saw just to see what I can do with one!

If I had to choose one thing though, it would be the armour. In my course we are in the midst of an independent project and I chose to make a historical costume. Everyone is quite surprised when I mention that I am replicating samourai armor (just the shoulder guards for the moment) rather  than an elaborate rococo dress! I just can't get enough of the freedom that comes from using and assembling materials other than sewing fabrics (but I like that too, don't get me wrong).
To compromise and so that I can wear my favorite dresses risk-free, I created a transparent apron out of clear vinyl. It only came to me afterwards that it looks a little kinky...

Okay, and heavy metal. It helps.

Lolita Blog Carnival: Frill-talia!

I had to break hiatus with the weekly posts, and this theme really excited me! I have been rather busy, and neglecting my blog (blame tumblr as well, I have been spending too much time there...), but I want to try to post more regularly now. I have to stop overthinking and just write!

So this week we decided to create outfits inspired by a certain country. Well, this was a simple choice for me: France! Creating a coordinate evoking a place necessarily involves pulling on tropes, archetypes, and symbols known internationally, and not only am I familiar with my country's symbols, I also really love them aesthetically! However, I also tried to involve a few elements that might not be as widely recognized, that is the silhouette and details from school uniforms in the 1900's: the peter pan collar, the puff sleeves, the high waist.

The main piece is the JSK from indie brand Apricot. I just love these stripes and how the cut relates to old french school girls' uniforms. The sailor blouse also reminds of the uniform. I would even wear this despite it being blue!
The Angelic Pretty biscuit bag and jumper were obvious choices, especially with the french flag ribbon on the brooch! Petit Beurre are biscuits so reminiscent of childhood afternoons!
I chose this cute beret that I found on Etsy rather than any brand one I found because they always seemed overly decorated for this outfit.
Finally the shoes and socks added the little retro finishing touch!
The wig is more of a personal preference than anything else. I really love this lengh at the moment and I am hoping to get this wig soon!
I didn't include jewellery in the collage but I would go for simple pearl bracelets and Angelic Pretty's matching biscuit necklace and hairclips to go with the bag, and the AP Metly chocolate brooch.

What would you wear if you were to represent your country? I can't wait to see!

Lolita Blog Carnival: Your Favorite Dress!

Fairly easy theme this week ;) I know exactly what my dream dresses are! Indeed, there are two which I can safely say are my favorite dresses.

First up is Claudia the Fairytale Princess.

The colors in this dress are so perfectly complementary, the deep blues of the bodice, the gorgeous hue of those roses, and the gentle cream of the soft chiffon (or whatever)... You can tell just by looking at it how soft and beautiful the lace is. The design itself is so reminiscent of Snow White that I thought that was the inspiration. I still don't know if it was, but this is a dress which embodies what lolita is so me: elegance, raffinement, with a touch of antique-ness.

Baby's Ribbon Ribbon Corset JSK

Wow. This must be the first dress I really, really fell inlove with. The lines are so elegant and the details so dainty. The shape reminds me of a ballet dancer. I don't hav much else to say, except that Ribbon Ribbon still appeals to me after all these years in lolita!

I just had to add this one, I can't stop myself: Angelic Pretty's Soap Bubble JSK! So. FRILLY!

If we are  talking about favorite as opposed to dream dress, as I first understood, then that would definitely be my recently acquired Cherry JSK from Baby the Stars Shine Bright. No worn photos yet, but this dress is just stunning! It might be my favorite, but there isn't a dress in my wardrobe that I don't adore <3 Actually, because I find Cherry Parade so beautiful, I have a feeling I won't dare wear it often! My most worn, most loved ones are my  Body Line Pink Soft Cream JSK and Baby Pink Tartan Check JSK in that case!
